booze at school!

Psssst — I’m going to let you in on Irvine’s best kept secret.

The secret is the Anthill Pub & Grille, a watering hole in UCI’s student center plaza. There’s almost 30 beers on tap, and they have a small food menu with grilled items and typical bar foods.

While the crowd can be annoyingly perky at times, there are a good amount of grown ups here, like the grad students and professors.

There are no waiters here, so you place your order at the little counter in the corner and wait till your number is called. And you have to  go up to the bar and squeeze your way to the barmaiden to get your booze. But that’s what a pub should be like, don’t you think? No frills!
Prices are good to begin with (12/13 bucks per pitcher), but with the 4 to 7pm happy hour, it gets ridiculous. Don and I shared a pitcher of Lagunitas IPA — a very floral and bitter ale. As you can see, the money-to-happy ratio is huge here.

But the real secret is the tri tip sandwich, that’s only available on Thursdays. It’s nothing fancy nor epic, just a normal tri tip sandwich with tangy bbq sauce on a crispy french roll, but the exclusivity makes it all the yummier. You can add super crispy fries for a buck, or shell out two bucks for sweet potato fries — which, by the way, was very delicious.

When you’re done with the boozin’ and noshin’, you can hang out with the various anteater ephemera around campus.
