Since my parents acquired their small dog, Shiro, a lot of their day trips revolve around him. Somewhere with a trail, a beach, lots of bushes to pee on…
… And restaurants with patio seating.
Even if it was 54 degrees outside with the wind speed of 10 mph, and a storm coming in the afternoon, the furry snow-country mutt was very pleased.
Which brings me to Sam’s Chowder House in Half Moon Bay.
My parents came here last summer after reading about it somewhere, and they won’t stop talking about the lobster roll (something about it being the top 5 sandwiches in America). Click on the jump to see other noms (and for more photos of cute-ass mongrel)
13.95 for a ginormous bowl of chaw-dah that will feed three people, easy. Everything in it is super chunky and gloriously hearty.
Kumamotos (3 ea). I love itty bitty oysters. In Hiroshima, where my Mom is from, the oysters are ginormous (called “iwagaki” or rock oysters) and have to be cut in the shell. As a child, having to see oyster innards is mildly… traumatizing. I couldn’t eat oysters for a while… Thank god you don’t have that kind of problem with Kumamotos.
Lobster roll (21.95). It is fucking ginormous. And for something that’s just butter and boil seasoning on a crispy buttered bun, why is it so delicious??? The coleslaw is a little bland, but that’s what the Tabasco and Tapatio on the condiment rack is for.
Fish and Chips platter with cajun fries (15.95)
Grilled Fish Sandwich (13.95)
After lunch, you can walk down the trail from the restaurant and venture out to the beach.
Here my sisters are hanging out on some rock-border thing by the beach. With a bag of dog poo. It was frigging cold but lots people were out fishing for something.
c-c-c-c-c-c-cold!
Something Shiro found on the beach.
We also went to the pier to see what the catch of the day was. The pier is especially exciting for dogs because there are pelicans! Seagulls! Seals! Although Shiro could careless because he had to go up to every single other dog and sniff their butts.
Just some dungeoness and rock cods today. We bought some and ate it for dinner. Fresh fish is awesome.
These baby pelicans know where the party’s at.
On a warmer day, there are more parts to Half Moon Bay that you can venture out to, like the Old Town and the tide pools, but we were freezing our asses off and decided to call it a day. It was fun though, I definitely want to come back in the summer!
