if you are a bird owner in Orange County, you’ve heard of Omar’s Exotic Birds.
it’s the one store in the entire county that sells all of your bird needs- food, toys, grooming and boarding services, stands, playpens… EVERYTHING! it’s a really amazing place that you should check out if you ever consider purchasing a bird, or if you want to introduce your kids to animal husbandry.
anyway, a few years ago Omar’s opened a San Juan Capistrano location, right by the mission. it didn’t do so well so they converted it to a petting zoo called Zoomars, and it’s been pretty popular ever since. I’ve always enjoyed any attraction that lets you interact with animals, but now that my friends and I have kids, it’s quadruple the fun!
not only can you feed pellet feed to the standard goats and cows, but you can also buy a basket of fresh vegetables ($3) and feed it to the guinea pigs. the guinea pig pen is HUGE and the cavvies are always up for a snack. they’re socialized well and enjoy being handled. baby Lan handled it pretty well, but then again she lives in a zoo anyways (we have 5 parrots, a cat, and a dog).
for viewing, they also exhibit fancy bantam chickens (!!!!), an emu, some rabbits, and lots of llamas and alpacas.
other attractions include: a sand box filled with corn (kids go CRAZY over it), a train ride, horse and pony rides, and a playground. children’s entrance fee is $7, adult $8.
